Voltarum Fitness compares walking pads, compact ellipticals and adjustable dumbbells for people who live in flats. It is part of Voltarum, a group of independent buying guides.

Why it exists

Most walking pad comparisons repeat the maker's listing: top speed, motor power and "whisper quiet". At home, though, two other things decide the purchase:

• space: whether it fits under the desk, under the sofa or in the corner of the bedroom, in use and put away;
• noise: whether the neighbour below will come up to complain.

So every machine has its size in use and folded, its weight limit and its cushioning system always in view, a to-scale drawing of the space it takes, and a verdict for each specific situation (working from home, flats, tall users…), worked out with rules we publish.

How we work

• Data comes from the makers. If they do not publish a figure, we say so; we do not invent it.
• The verdict for each situation follows the methodology.
• Opinions and scores are marked as such.
