Voltarum Mini Switch Guide

About Voltarum Mini Switch Guide

Voltarum Mini Switch Guide helps you choose a small network switch for a specific job: more ports behind the TV, 2.5 GbE for a mini PC and a NAS, VLANs for the smart-home gadgets, PoE for cameras, or the core of a homelab in a 10-inch rack.

Most switch listings are long tables of numbers. At home the questions are simpler:

  • Will it use the ports I already have? Many mini PCs, NAS boxes and fibre routers now have 2.5 GbE; a gigabit switch wastes them.
  • Do I need a managed switch? Only for VLANs, link aggregation or monitoring, and "smart" switches do most of that for little money.
  • Will it be silent, and will it fit? A fan in the living room, or a switch 4 mm too wide for a 10-inch rack, ruins the plan.

So every switch page shows what it is good for, with the reasons taken from its specifications, and a clear line between facts, rule-based verdicts and our opinion.

What we cover

Small switches from palm-sized five-port boxes to 10-inch rack units: gigabit, 2.5 GbE, 2.5 GbE with 10 GbE uplinks and all-10 GbE, unmanaged, smart and fully managed, with and without PoE. Big 19-inch rack switches are left out on purpose.

Mini PCs, routers that run OpenWrt and hardware for local AI have their own guides on the same site family.
