What it is good for

Derived from the specs

Our rules applied to its specs. The reasons come from the data in the specification table. How the verdicts are decided

    • Official or well-supported Home Assistant OS image
    • microSD or USB storage only: use a USB SSD for reliability
    • Low power for 24/7 use
    • No hardware video encoder: direct play only, or slow software transcoding
    • Decodes HEVC 10-bit in hardware, not AV1
    • Arm processor: Docker works, Proxmox VE does not
    • Up to 16 GB of RAM for containers
    • One network port: only as a 'router on a stick' with VLANs and a managed switch
  • NASLimited
    • No internal drive slot: USB drives only
  • DesktopLimited
    • Linux desktop on Arm: fine for browsing, coding and learning, slow with heavy sites
    • 40-pin GPIO header
    • The most tutorials, HATs and libraries of any board

Configurations and where to buy

Prices are editorial references (launch price and a typical street price on the date shown), not live prices. In 2026 the memory shortage has pushed many prices well above launch.

Overview

Editorial opinion

Best for: Home Assistant, learning Linux and electronics, and small always-on services.

Editorial opinionWould we buy it today?

Yes for electronics, learning and Home Assistant with 4–8 GB. For a general home server, compare it with an N150 mini PC first.

Pros and cons

Editorial opinion

Pros

  • Best documentation, accessories and community
  • PCIe connector for an NVMe SSD
  • Official Home Assistant OS image

Cons

  • 2026 prices are far above launch: an N150 mini PC can cost less than a 16 GB kit
  • No hardware video encoder
  • Case, active cooler, 27 W supply and storage cost extra

Good to know

Budget for the official 27 W USB-C supply, the Active Cooler and either a good microSD card or an M.2 HAT with an NVMe SSD.
